Books Through Bars
Books Through Bars sends quality reading material to prisoners and encourages creative dialogue on the criminal justice system, thereby educating those living inside and outside of prison walls.

Volunteer

Books Through Bars depends on many different levels of volunteer involvement.

Book-Packing – individuals

The easiest way to get involved with Books Through Bars is to participate in one of our regularly scheduled book packing activities.

Tuesday nights, 7:30 – 9:30 PM
1st & 3rd Saturdays of every month, 11 AM – 2PM

MapQuest Directions

You will read letters from prisoners requesting educational materials, search through our library of donated books for a good match, and package the books for mailing. No need to RSVP – just come by and we’ll get you started.

Book-Packing – groups

If you and a group of 5-20 friends/co-workers/classmates would like to organize a special service activity just for your group, let us know. Because we have our own constraints, we may not be able to accommodate every request – but please ask! Email volunteer@booksthroughbars.org for more information.

Office Work

We can definitely use your help in other ways! There are a wide variety of office-related tasks – such as sorting and shelving book donations, opening mail, responding to non-book requests from prisoners, updating our email list, maintaining our database and many other assorted tasks. If you can commit to at least 1 hour per week – or a few hours per month – let us know. We’ll determine what makes best sense for you and for Books Through Bars. Email volunteer@booksthroughbars.org for more information.

Driving

We are always in desperate need of drivers! If you’re willing to pick up (and deliver) books on occasion, please let us know. Email volunteer@booksthroughbars.org for more information.
